Kaelie’s Top 10 Tips and Tricks for Traveling with Alopecia
Written by Kaelie Piscitello
I have always tried not to let my alopecia get in my way of doing anything I want to do. I still work out at the gym, vacation at the beach, and go about my daily life despite my lack of hair.
However, I understand why it might feel hard for others with my autoimmune disease to feel beautiful and confident in their daily lives.
Everyone should be able to walk around feeling confident in themselves. In honor of Alopecia Awareness Month, I have decided to share my top pieces of advice for how you can enjoy your vacation in spite of your hair loss.
Cover Up! (With Sunscreen)
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big believer that bald is beautiful. You should be able to walk around without a wig and feel gorgeous and free. That said, you do not want a sunburn all over your scalp. Sleeping or wearing a hat or wig later in the day wouldn’t feel nice.
Always wear a hat or wig and lather up with sunblock when you know you’re going to be in the sun for an extended period. If you’re wearing a hat, cover any spots left exposed with sunscreen, like the ponytail slot at the back of the cap.
Invest in a “Swim Wig”
If you’re like me and feel more comfortable in wigs, then you should invest in a second wig, or a “swim wig,” that you can get wet and wash often. L
ook at synthetic hair options because they cost less, and you can wash them more often. Hair stylists recommend washing real hair wigs every two weeks to preserve them; however, you can wash fake hair as much as you like, making it perfect for long, sweaty travel days.
If you are willing to spend more money on a wig that looks good at the beach and work and that you can wash often, then you should search for somewhere like Salon Monique in Canton, Massachusetts, that sells high-quality synthetic wigs.
Salon Monique’s wigs look great wet and feel light and breathable. I purchased mine a few years ago, and it’s still in great shape! I usually wear it to the beach and the gym.
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, many wig shops sell hair pieces for under $100. You can also turn to Amazon for a cheaper wig.
While these wigs might not look as realistic as human hair, they will last beyond your vacation because you can wear them on other beach trips and workout sessions in the gym. The best part about a cheap wig is you won’t feel as bad about exposing it to the elements as you do your human hair piece.
Don’t Travel Wearing Human Hair
I have always found it difficult to keep my wig in good condition while sitting on germy planes and getting sweaty rushing around crowded train stations and airports. To ensure that your wig stays clean for the start of your trip, I recommend wearing your “swim wig” or a hat to keep your daily wig in better condition.
Purchase a Traveling Wig Case
Several companies make travel cases designed to keep your wig’s shape intact during travel. I use the $35 Milano Collection case from Amazon.
I put my wig in the case, cap facing up, and tuck the excess hair into the top of it. You can also choose from many other options on Amazon, including a smaller organizer, extension bags, and storage boxes.
If you want to save money, you can put your wig in a large plastic freezer bag and put it at the top of your carry-on. I did this before I knew about the cases, and it worked just fine. Choose the best option for you based on your budget and hair piece.
Carry All Wig-Related Items in Your Carry-on
Imagine this, if you will: your wig gets lost along with your checked luggage that didn’t make it to your final destination. That would stink.
Always carry all alopecia-related items, including medications, wigs, and wig accessories, with you. Alopecia can be an expensive autoimmune disease, so treat all related products like any valuable items and keep them accessible in your carry-on or personal item.
Don’t Forget Your Wig Tape!
For a reliable solution to securing your wig, I recommend investing in a solid, waterproof adhesive that will last you throughout the day. I use A D & F wig tape, but you can also Ultra Hold or find another reliable brand.
When shopping for wig tape, pay attention to the type of wig you’re buying tape for. Some companies make them for lace fronts, while others gear their product towards silk tops. Your product decision will depend on you and your hairpiece, but once you find a good wig tape, it will be your best friend.
Stay Cool with Wipes
I always struggle to keep cool with all the extra weight on my head, especially in hot climates. However, since moving to Taiwan, I have found a convenient solution.
I keep a pack of cooling wipes to towel off my head, neck, and face when I’m outside for long stretches. They really change the game during day trips.
Since starting Fulbright, I have used Taiwanese brand wipes; however, in the United States, you can purchase Natural Essential Cooling Wipes or Preparation H Soothing Relief from Walmart.
Buy some ahead of your trip and pack them in your carry-on. If you cannot find cooling wipes, frozen baby wipes placed in a small cooler or plastic bag will also do the trick.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
As I said, wearing a wig makes it easy to get overheated. Always have some water on hand, especially during a travel day and when visiting a hot climate.
Take care of yourself in elevated temperatures by finding shade to walk in when you can and remembering to take breaks when walking outdoors.
Plan Your Wig Washing Schedule in Advance
Most people wash their human hair wigs less often, so I recommend timing your rinses around your trip.
I always shampoo my wig a day or two before leaving and right when I return. This way, I’m not worrying about its smell or look when trying to enjoy my trip.
Additionally, do not forget your swim wig shampoo! Unfortunately, that all-in-one shampoo, conditioner, and body wash your hotel provides will not keep your wig soft and realistic.
Fill up reusable travel-sized shampoos and conditioners for your swim wig since you’ll want to clean it more often since you’ll be wearing it traveling and at the beach.
Remember the Alopecia Perks
Remember, you don’t need to blow dry or style your hair before going to dinner. If you have multiple hair pieces, you can change your style depending on the weather or occasion.
While alopecia isn’t ideal, it can have its positives on and off vacation. If you’re like me, you don’t need to pack a razor or spend money on a wax before your trip.
In short, don’t let your hair loss stop you from having a fabulous trip. As so many people without alopecia like to remind us, we are healthy, and that’s a blessing. So go see the world.
