This year is your year for travel! As the calendar turns to 2025, many feel inspired to set goals and embrace fresh beginnings. Why not ignite your wanderlust? Whether you venture into your local surroundings, budget for your dream getaway, or reconnect with nature, you have countless ways to make travel a meaningful part of your life in 2025.
This guide will explore practical and creative travel resolutions that inspire your inner adventurer. From exploring your hometown treasures to embracing slow travel and picking up new skills, these goals fit various lifestyles and budgets. Let’s turn your travel dreams into plans and make this year unforgettable!
Explore Locally!
Exploring your backyard can be the best way to travel sometimes, especially if you have a car! Make a list of nearby destinations to explore during weekends or day trips you can take. Look out for events near you so you can take advantage of them and go.
My friends back home enjoy exploring national and state parks nearby as day trips, but you can also drive out to nearby cities and towns for something new. Make it a goal to visit one new local landmark or park each month.
Work Travel Into Your Budget
Sometimes, people cannot put aside travel funds. However, if you can, commit to saving a specific amount each month for a dedicated trip. To do this, first determine what destinations work within your budget.
If you want to go somewhere further away, consider saving up for an extended time or putting away more in your monthly installments. Apps such as Mint or YNAB track and prioritize travel savings, allowing you to budget trips and life easily.
Invest in a Travel Credit Card
I have a travel credit card and I love using my points to save money when I go away. I used my travel card as much as I could for day-to-day purchases and later bought myself more legroom on my flight home from Taiwan to the United States in January with my points.
Signing up for a travel credit card can give you great travel deals and cashback as you make your purchases. This can allow you to save for trips faster and use points to spend less on vacation. Many cards have rewards or miles programs to help you purchase hotels and transportation.
Plan Time off Work Strategically
The most expensive time to travel is during the summer and winter holidays when everyone goes away. The best time to vacation can sometimes happen in the off-season because the destinations have fewer tourists, and prices go way down. Traveling during the off-season can also make taking time off from work more manageable, because no one else wants the time off, making it easier to get the request approved.
If you want or need to travel during the high season, book flights and accommodations early and when companies have deals. Ask for time off work in advance to ensure that only a few other people will miss work.
You can also plan longer vacations by combining holiday weekends with leave days. For example, many people take off the week of the Fourth of July. Furthermore, plan a “workation” where you can combine work and travel if your job allows. Workations have become more popular now that the number of remote jobs has increased.
Use Vacation as an Excuse for a Friendship Reunion
Do you have friends you haven’t seen in a while? Make a girl’s or boy’s trip an excuse to reconnect and enjoy your friends’ presence. These vacations can be simple weekends or week-long vacations; it depends on what works best for you and your friends. Of course, any excuse to see your friends is a good one.
Reconnect with Nature
This year, consider vacationing in the great outdoors and aim to spend more time outdoors and appreciate natural beauty. Visit a national park as your vacation and explore hiking trails or eco-retreats
Not a hiker? Consider taking a good old-fashioned holiday at the beach where you can just lay in the sand with a good book and relax with a good book!
Document Your Adventures
If you travel often, consider creating an Instagram page dedicated to your adventures. It makes for an excellent virtual diary about everything you’ve done. I love looking back at mine from over the years.
You can also get a travel diary where you record your adventures. Then, you can always go back and read the specific memories you wrote about.
Some other ideas for documenting your travels can involve making a scrapbook and shooting videos on your vacation to make a video recapping your experiences.
Embrace Slow Travel
This year, wind down and stop trying to hit every city on your bucket list. Instead, plan more extended trips to fewer destinations and immerse yourself in local cultures.
Sometimes, quality is better than quantity, and if you take the time to explore one or two places instead of ten, it can make for a much more relaxing vacation.
Pick up a New Travel Skill
Picking up travel skills at home is easier than ever! For example, language learning convenience has increased with the help of online language classes and apps like Rosetta Stone and Duolingo. You can also purchase online textbooks and do a self-study. If you’re more confident in a language and want to brush up on it, turn some of your phone settings into that language
You can also improve your photography skills to make your photos more Instagram-worthy. Practice shooting pictures at home in your neighborhood and with different cameras if you have them. In the age where all trips go on Instagram, you want to ensure you are photo-ready!
